How TECdoc Scribe Can Save Time, Reduce Stress & Improve Patient Care
Technological advances in diagnostics and treatment have empowered physicians to improve countless lives. However, the technological advances supporting healthcare documentation and administration—particularly electronic medical records (EMR)—have proven to be a drag for physicians (as well as many patients) by creating new pain points and becoming a leading cause of burnout.
Developed by physicians, here’s how TECdoc Scribe, an AI-assisted medical scribe system, can alleviate much of the pain, saving physicians hours a week on charting and more.
Pain Point 1: Eliminating “Pajama Time” For Physicians
While customizable to most any medical specialty, the TECdoc Scribe app was initially developed for emergency room physicians running between patient rooms during their shift, only to spend hours of time charting after their shift was over.
“What we sought to do is make it so that you record right there with the patients, so you don’t have to go back and try to remember what to dictate and what they said,” explains Eric Wilke, MD, an emergency medicine physician and chief operations officer of TECHealth.
It was designed to be a huge leap forward from even the voice-to-text dictation systems that many physicians across specialties find only somewhat helpful in reducing documentation time and remembering all the relevant information from patient interactions.
Using ambient listening technology during a patient encounter, the app’s AI only keys on clinically relevant information to start building the chart. It also allows physicians to add their own verbal notes, which can be made walking between exam rooms or whenever.
“It’s all captured right there in a well put together narrative,” says Dr. Wilke.
TECdoc Scribe can even populate lab and imaging results into the chart simply by taking a picture.
“By the time you’re ready to discharge the patient, you have almost everything you need, taking away the burden of having to do it after hours,” he adds.
Pain Point 2: Simplifying EMR Complexity For Faster Charting
Between clinics and hospitals, physicians often spend hours learning different EMR systems and creating dot-phrases and templates based on the care setting. TECdoc Scribe can serve as a shortcut. The app allows physicians to build the patient’s chart in real time, then copy and paste it into the host EMR.
“You’ll still have to know how to start a chart, put in orders and discharge a patient—those basic things,” says Dr. Wilke. “But if you don’t spend time building the dot phrases, you’re spending a lot of time typing or dictating. Using our system, you just have to know one thing.”
And unlike a hospital EMR, which can take hours to set-up to personal specifications, learn and maintain proficiency, it only takes minutes to set-up and start using TECdoc Scribe.
Pain Point 3: Overcoming Information Overload In Medical Practice
The amount of medical information modern physicians must keep track of to consistently operate at their highest level can be overwhelming. It adds to the cognitive burden. TECdoc Scribe can offer an assist by making suggestions of possibilities to consider.
Dr. Wilke recounts the story of a colleague who saw a patient with symptoms of pre-eclampsia but who’d delivered her baby weeks earlier. That led the physician, who was not using TECdoc Scribe at the time, to discount that as a possible diagnosis.
“We fed the exact data set into the AI tool and the number one potential diagnosis it came back with was pre-eclampsia,” Dr. Wilke recounts. Though rare, postpartum pre-eclampsia ended up being the correct diagnosis.
It can also make suggestions based on a picture of a skin condition or wound.
“Our AI can help move the ball forward in ways the physician didn’t initially consider,” he says. “It’s another set of eyes so to speak.”
The helpful suggestions can enhance safety, improving the experience for both patients and treating physicians.
